United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UN-OOSA)
Mandate
The United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs serves as the focal point for United Nations matters relating to outer space. The Office acts as the secretariat to the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space and its subsidiary bodies, and implements the recommendations of the Committee and the United Nations General Assembly.
OOSA also oversees the United Nations Programme on Space Applications which organizes a series of 8-10 annual seminars, workshops and conferences on various aspects of space technology and applications. These activities are held primarily for the benefit of the developing countries and emphasize the use of space technology and applications for economic and social development. The Office for Outer Space Affairs is also the coordinating agency for the regional Centres for Space Science and Technology Education - established in 5 regions of the world.
On behalf of the Secretary-General, the Office also maintains the Register of Objects Launched into Outer Space.
Activities
Under the aegis of the Programme on Space Applications, OOSA conducts 8-10 activities annually. Targeted at developing countries, the activities cover a wide range of topics from basic space science to remote sensing applications.
