Space Technology and Sustainable Development

List of space-related initiatives and programmes carried out by member States of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space and within the United Nations system that respond to specific recommendations contained in the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation of the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD)

The present list contains information on various programmes and initiatives involving the applications of space technology and science in such areas of sustainable development as managing water resources and disasters, combating desertification as well as improving health services. The list also contains information on space solutions to numerous WSSD actions aimed at achieving sustainable development for Africa and small island developing States.

The list serves as a comprehensive survey of the space community's response to the WSSD outcomes. The list can be a useful interactive reference resource for policy makers and development community representatives, particularly in developing countries, interested in taking advantage of the use of space science and technology and their applications to strengthen follow-up actions to the WSSD Plan of Implementation.
